Scenario Planning in times of change

It’s not simply true that failing to plan, is planning to fail.

How does this blog end?

Are you tempted to read ahead to find out? Is it now almost impossible to resist doing so? While this email may have a predetermined unchanging ending, that’s not the nature of business or life itself. Which is why strategy development and scenario planning are so important.

Strategy is a plan of action to achieve major aims. Which explains why strategy meetings too easily devolve into tactical discussions. Not because they become action oriented. It’s that a clear focus on the major goals is lost – or was never established – and the conversation drifts to minor aims and personal interests.

Scenario planning recognises that your operating environment is uncertain and changeable. It’s not simply true that failing to plan, is planning to fail. Reality is far more complex, with a myriad of uncontrollable factors. Successful planning requires planning for success – in more ways than one. Collaboratively strategising using a modern adaptive approach.

So how does this blog end? Well, there are in fact multiple scenarios:

  • You might keep reading and exploring further.

  • You could choose to end here.

  • Or here.

  • Alternatively, having skipped ahead to these closing lines – welcome! – you might decide to rewind back to the start.

If only life was like that at times.

Now that’s an interesting scenario.
